Bill Steyer is the Head Coach for the Track and Field and Cross Country Program at Lane, In the five (5) years as Head Coach for Cross Country at Lane, Steyer has led his teams to five (5) NWAC Cross Country Championship Titles - three (3) Men’s and two (2) Women’s Titles.

Last season, Steyer led both the Men’s and Women’s teams to their first Lane sweep of the NWAC Championship Cross Country Titles since 1985. The Titan Men finished with 46 team points to Spokane's 52. Lane was led by Logan Auxier, who took second place. Ethan Hosang placed fifth. Unlike the men's title, the women's team championship was easily won by the Lane Titans, who finished with 42 points. Spokane was well behind in second with 100 points. Lane had its top-five runners all place 16th or better.

In 2019, Steyer led the women's cross country team to their first championship team title since 2005 in commanding fashion. With 22 team points, the Lane Titan women cruised to a 74-point victory over six-time back-to-back champions Spokane Sasquatch who placed second with 96 points.

 In 2018, Steyer led the men's cross country team to their fourth and his second consecutive team title. The Titans had the top two and three of the top six finishers in Andy Muha (second consecutive individual title), Shane Henderson (second) and Anthony Stone (sixth). The women finished second with three top-nine finishers: Alexis Crowl (sixth), Melody McGrath (seventh) and Claire Ebert (ninth). 

In 2017, Steyer led the cross country men's team to their second consecutive NWAC team title and coached the top two finishers at the NWAC Championships, Andy Muha and Michael Martin. With the finishes, Steyer was named Southern Region Coach of the Year. On the women's side the Titans placed third as a team and had the third-place finisher in Carly Kleefeld. 

Steyer has received NWAC Coach of the Year for all five (5) championship cross country titles 

Steyer relocated to Eugene from Homer, Alaska, where he served as the high school’s head coach for cross country and track and field. During his seven-year tenure in that role, Steyer helped produce five state championship team titles and six state runner-up team awards. In his last year as head coach, 2016-17, both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams won state titles. This was the third consecutive championship for the girls and the first time ever for the boys. Last spring, the Homer girl’s track and field team also won their first state championship. Despite being a small school, Steyer’s high school became a recognized running powerhouse. Steyer was named Girls Cross Country Coach of the Year in 2014, 2015 and 2016 by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USATFCCCA), among other awards.

Steyer is a former competitive distance runner and triathlete. During his 22 years in Alaska, he competed in numerous mid/long distance road and trail races with many strong finishes. He was also a former competitive long distance dog musher having completed five one-thousand-mile-long sled dog races including the Iditarod. His highest finish was in fifth place.

Steyer has a USATF Level 1 Certification and USATFCCCA Technical Certification for the sprint, jumping, and distance events. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree of arts in geography/natural resource management from the University of Washington.
