Titans Move on to NWAC Championship Game

The Lane Titans Women's Basketball team defeated the Peninsula Pirates in the NWAC Final Four Saturday afternoon.

The two teams have been on a collision course for the majority of the season, since their matchup in November that the Titans won in overtime.

Neither team has lost a game in four months, and a highly contested game was anticipated.

Both teams lived up to their evenly matched reputation early, as they found themselves deadlocked at 11 points midway through the first quarter.

The Titans opened up an 11-3 run to take a 22-14 lead near the end of the quarter before a Peninsula bucket trimmed the lead to 6.

Scoring came slow in the second quarter for both teams, but the Titans were able to build 10 point lead with under a minute to go in the first half.

With 5 seconds to go, Maitlin Young found herself open in the corner and was able to hit a three just before time expired to take a 39-26 lead going into halftime.

Young led the team in scoring at the half with 12, while Micah Wicks had 11 points of her own to go along with 6 rebounds and 4 assists.

In a crucial third quarter for both teams with the season on the line, the Titans blew the game open.

The Titans opened with a 9-0 run to get the lead to 22 points quickly.

While the Titans had trouble stopping Peninsula post Alecsis Smith, a steady barrage of threes kept the Pirates at bay.

The lead never dipped below 16, and ballooned to as much as 31 early in the fourth quarter.

The Titans ended taking the game handedly 80-63.

Freshman Maitlin Young established herself with a great shooting performance, scoring 23 points on 5-9 shooting from behind the arc.

Micah Wicks was not far behind with 18 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists.

All 5 Titan starters scored in double figures.

This win advances them to the NWAC Championship on Sunday against the Walla Walla Warriors.
