Titans offense goes cold in loss at Umpqua

The Titans struggled through their worst offensive game in their loss at Umpqua, 68-64.

How it happened: 11 of the first 13 points were scored by Umpqua. The Titans were down until Tashon Brown made a layup to tie the game at 19 with 10:18 remaining in the 1st. A quick 4-0 run a few minutes later gave the Titans a four-point lead, 25-21, with 8:39 remaining. The Titans allowed a 15-6 run in the final 3:58 and were down 45-36 at half.

The Titans shot 43.2 percent; Cody Mathis had 10 points and nine rebounds; Lucas Wulson had eight points and five rebounds; all but five of their points came from starters.

An Umpqua layup with 15:42 to go in the 2nd half put the Titans down by their largest margin, 13 points. The Titans reduce the deficit to two with 12:20 remain. The Titans took their only lead of the 2nd half with 2:27 remaining after Tarik Cool made a three. Cool followed his three with a layup, but in the final minute Umpqua went on a 7-0 run to win 68-64.  

Tarik Cool had 12 of the Titans 28 points; Lucas Wilson had seven points and eight rebounds; the Titans as a team shot 27.3 percent and 23.1 percent from three. Umpqua also struggled shooting, making 30.3 percent and 1-13 from three. Seven of the 23 Umpqua points came in the final minute. The Titans allowed only 10 points in the middle 14 minutes of the half and were plus 16 in that period of the game.

What/who stood out: 35.7 percent shooting was a season-low; previous low was 35.8 percent in their loss vs Chemeketa…64 points were a season-low; previous low was 79 vs Tacoma in their second meeting…eight assists are the second fewest to six in a win at Walla Walla…four threes were a season-low and their first time in five games and only second time in eight games with fewer than 10 threes made…10 made free throws made tied a season-low; low was vs Tacoma (2nd meeting)…14 free throw attempts were second fewest and first time since loss vs Chemeketa with fewer than 20 attempts…seven turnovers is the seventh time with single-digits…10 fouls is the fewest all season and second straight game with fewer than 20 committed.

Tarik Cool had 18 points…Cody Mathis had 15 points and a career-high 15 rebounds for his sixth double-double…Lucas Wilson was the only other player in double-figures after 15 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for his forth double-double.

What it means: The Titans fall to a tie with Chemeketa for 2nd place at 6-2 and the are now 17-3 overall.

What's next: The Titans travel to 2nd place Chemeketa (12-6, 6-2) on Saturday at 4 p.m.
