The Alumni started off hot, but the Titans prevailed 112-87.
How it happened: The Titans called a timeout with 17:39 down 6-0. The Alumni would score first eight points of the game before the Titans responded with the next nine points. The Alumni were led by Levi Strandberg with eight first half points; Alex Coleman was second with six. Rodney Hounshell had 12 points and two rebounds for the Titans. Tarik Cool had nine points, tied for a team-high four rebounds and a team-high three steals. Fouls were a problem again for the Titans, they committed 11 in the first half and Gabe Sorber had five in eight minutes. The Titans shot 52.4 percent from the field and mad 6-13 attempts from three. They struggled defending the three point line, allowing the Alumni to shoot 5-11 from three. Another area of concern, the free throw line; the Titans only had three attempts in comparison to the 13 for the Alumni.
The Titans opened the second half with a Josh Erickson three, and scored seven of the first 10 points. The Titans took a timeout up 76-61 with 11:46 remaining after a 6-2 Alumni run. The Titans outscored the Alumni 36-26. Tyler Coleman got warmed up and scored 11 points in the second half; Tre Clark had six points and four rebounds. The Titans did a better job of defending the three, allowing only 3-11 shooting. 10 more Titan fouls, allowed 14 more free throw attempts. The Titans found their stroke from three, hitting 12-26 and shot 47.6 percent overall. Cool was anything but in the second half, led the way with 18 points. Erickson had eight points and six rebounds. Tashon Brown had nine points, four assists and three steals and Cody Mathis had six points and seven rebounds.
What/who stood out: The Titan committed 21 fouls which is not a massive number, but it lead to 27 free throw attempts as many of the fouls were of the shooting variety. The Alumni had two more offensive rebounds than the Titans, but the Titans did win the overall rebounding battle 42-38. The Titans recorded double-digit steals again, with 13 and they had 24 assists on 42 made field goals and only committed 13 turnovers. The Titans had seven players score in double figures.
Cool lead the Titans in scoring with 27, he also had five rebounds, four steals and three steals. Erickson had his first double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Brown had 13 points, eight assists, five steals and four rebounds. Lezjon Bonds 13 points, five assists and two rebounds. Mathis 13 points, nine rebounds, two steals, two blocks and a assist. Will Graves had 13 points, five rebounds and four assists.
The Alumni's Tyler Coleman had 13 points in 15 minutes. Coleman played for two years from 2011-13. He averaged 16.75 and 16.84 ppg. His brother, Alex Coleman, had eight points, a rebound and a steal. He played from 2011-13 and averaged 4.54 and 3.83 ppg, 2.62 and 5.8 rpg, 1.19 and 1.4 spg as a Swiss army knife for the Titans. Levi Strandberg had 11 points, three rebounds and an assist. He played from 2011-13 as well and he averaged 10.35 and 8.58 ppg, 3.31 and 3.26 rpg. Tre Clark had 10 points, five rebounds and a steal. He played 2012-13 and 2014-15. He averaged 4.32 and 14.33 ppg, 3.23 and 9.76 rpg, .65 and .95 spg and .65 and 2.29 bpg. He had a career high 23 rebounds against Edmonds, 26 points against SWOCC, 10 blocks and nine assists against Everett, a playoff game where he almost had a quadruple-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds, during his sophomore year.
What it means: The Titans are 2-0 and play three more non-conference games before the Dale Bates Tournament December 7-9.
