Eugene, Ore. – The Titans held Chemeketa to 51 points, but it took until the fourth quarter before the Titans pulled away for the 68-51 win.
How it happened:
First quarter: The Titans were down as many as six points, 3:37 into the game. They closed the gap to one possession five times, but Chemeketa led throughout the quarter.
Second quarter: At the 7:26 mark of the quarter the Titans tied the game for the first time since it was 0-0. Then 1:42 later Mya Henry made a layup to give the Titans their first lead of the game, 24-22. The Titans extended their lead to five in the quarter after Kalina Rojas made a basket at the 4:18 mark. A 9-3 Storm run to end the quarter returned the lead to them, 32-31.
Third quarter: It was a back and forth start to the quarter until the Storm made two free throws to extend their lead back to two possessions, 39-34, with 5:33 remaining. Two more Storm baskets extended their run to 8-1 and their lead to eight, 43-35, with 3:57 to go. The Titans responded with a 7-1 run to the 1:18 mark. Kalina Rojas made a free throw with 16 seconds left to make it a one possession deficit after three quarters, 43-46.
Fourth quarter: Kalina Rojas made a layup 52 seconds into the quarter to give the Titans the 47-46, a lead they would hold the remainder of the game. The Titans went 6-6 from the field went on a 13-0 run to take a 56-46 lead with 6:19 left. The Titans overall made their first nine field goal attempts with the first miss not coming until the 3:43 mark. The Titans outscored the Storm 25-5, made 11-16 field goals, all three threes and held Chemeketa to 18.2 percent shooting (2-11) in the quarter.
What stood out:
36 rebounds: the Titans are 2-3 with fewer than 40 rebouds in a game … 13 turnovers: the Titans are 13-1 with 15 or fewer turnovers… 68 points: the Titans are 3-2 when scoring fewer than 70 points.
Who stood out:
Kalina Rojas: she added to her double-double total with 11 points and 12 rebounds for her 15th double-double and her 20th consecutive game with double figure points dating to the season finale last season ... Aolani Talamaivao-Calderon: scored a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds ... Megan Fossen: had 14 points, four assists and four steals; she has now scored in double figures in 31 of her 48 career games.
What it means:
The Titans are now one game ahead of Linn-Benton and Chemeketa for fourth place, .5 game behind third place Mt. Hood, one game behind second place Clackamas and two games behind first place Umpqua.
What's next:
The Titans (15-4, 4-2) travel to eighth place Clark (4-12, 0-6) in Vancouver, Washington this Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. tip with the Penguins.
