The Titans turned the ball over more times than there opponent for the first time this season, but nine threes and 24 made free throws carry them to a 75-69 win.
How it happened: The Titans got eight 1st quarter points from Mya India Thomas. The two teams were tied at 2 until the 5:49 mark due to 14 combined turnovers. Megan Fossen was able to break through with a three to give the Titans the lead. Both teams would trade short runs until the Titans seemed to gain control after a Thomas three to give them a 17-11 lead with 1:03 remaining. 14 seconds later Kiara Steen made a jump shot and the quarter would end with the Titans leading 17-13.
In the 1st the Titans had as many turnovers as shots attempted 14. Uncharacteristically, Kylie Guelsdorf had three. Guelsdorf came into the game with 10 totals in five games. She also found herself in foul trouble with two after one quarter. Thomas' eight points were accompanied by two rebounds, a steal and an assist.
The Kinghts had 12 turnovers and 41.7 percent from the field.
The 2nd quarter started with a Fossen three and had a double-digit lead until Ashlynn Burgess made a jump shot with 7:23 remaining. Burgess' shot would be part of a 8-0 run that closed the gap to 23-21 with 5:38 to go. With less than three minutes to go Guelsdorf drew a foul and made two free throws to give the Titans an eight point lead. The Titans would head to half up 35-31.
Guelsdorf had four points, all from the line. The Titans turnovers were a much better but not great seven. Chasity Spady had nine points for the Knight who shot 53.8 percent in the quarter. The Titans scored 12 of their 18 points from the free throw line.
The 3rd quarter started with the Knights scoring the first six points and taking a 37-35 lead. The Titans reclaimed the lead after Fossen scored five quick points that led to a Knights 30 second timeout. The Knights would respond and take a two point lead, but Guelsdorf hit a pair of free throws with six seconds left to tie the game at 52.
Fossen put in five points and grabbed two rebounds. Carlann kunkel had 10 points for the Knights. Overall both teams struggled from the field; the Titans shot 31.6 percent and the Knight 42.9 percent.
The 4th quarter again started with the Knights scoring first, they scored the first four. Thomas hit a three and Fossen made a jump shot, after a Titan timeout, with 8:13 to go to give the Titans a 57-56 lead that they wouldn't concede. The lead was as big as 72-61, but a late run made it interesting, but the Titans managed to work through late free throw misses and turnovers.
Fossen again came through with nine more points in what was a new career high, and Thomas added seven along with six rebounds, two assists and a steal.
The 4th was the Titans best quarter, allowing 25 percent shooting.
What/who stood out: The Titans shot only 40.4 percent from the field, but they made 24 of 31 free throws. Coming in both teams loses came when they struggled to get to the line, the Titans did not and they won. They had 33 TO's and 23 fouls, both season highs. The Titans also shot 40.9 percent from three on 22 attempts to help balance out their overall poor shooting.
Kylie Guelsdorf had nine points, all from the line. In fact she did not attempt a field goal. Megan Fossen had a career high 21 points and Mya India Thomas bounced back for 17 points on 5-11 shooting, and contributed an important nine rebounds, four assists and three steals.
What it means: This win give the Titans their first win away from home, and it was against a Wenatchee Valley team that was 4-1 coming in. The Titans are now 5-1.
What's next: The Titans play Walla Walla at 4 p.m. tomorrow. The Warriors beat Bellevue 70-64 in OT. The Warriors are 4-2 and 1-1 vs the Southern Region (Mt. Hood both times). The Warriors are 16th in scoring 66.7 ppg and they allow 61.8, 14th. They are led by McKenzie Gunter who averages 16.5 ppg.
