The Titans got 19 1st quarter points from Megan Still and were never challenged in a 103-36 victory over Simpson University JV.
How it happened: The Titans only conceded seven points and scored 31 on a mere 50 percent shooting in the 1st quarter, but Still had 19 on 7-9 from the floor and 5-6 from three.
The 2nd quarter was more of the same for the Titans, outscoring Simpson 29-6, taking a 60-13 lead into half. Still only played four minutes, but added another four points to her total. Kalina Rojas had arguably her best quarter of her young career, scoring four points, grabbing six rebounds and recording a steal in six minutes. The Titans missed a lot of open shots, which lead to a 40 percent shooting mark. They did get to the line 12 times after no attempts in the 1st.
With 23 1st half points, Still was 22 shy of breaking the school record set by Shelby Snook during the 2013-14 season, but she only played four minutes and had three points. The bench played 28 of the 50 minutes in the quarter, but Aolani Talamaivao-Calderon lead the way with 12 points, three rebounds and two steals in six minutes. Talamaivao-Calderon kept up her high field goal percentage by shooting 6-6 in the quarter, shooting 68.4 percent coming into the game. The Titans forced eight turnovers and held Simpson to 30.8 percent from the field.
The final quarter saw coach Sheley give the bench even more time, as they played 39 of 50 minutes. Maddy Carrier had six points, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Carrier finished with a new career high nine points. As a whole the second unit was playing almost exclusively without any starters and you could see the inexperience with each other as there were eight turnovers and they only shot 42.9 percent from the field.
What/who stood out: Six Titans scored in double-figures. They had 28 assists on 40 made field goals and doubled Simpson's rebound total with 46. The Titans forced 47 turnovers, but did them selves no favors by coughing it up 22 times. Outside of Still, the Titans only made 4-18 from three, despite many open looks. Many of the miscues and misses from the floor seemed to stem from a lack of energy and cohesiveness as the game was never close and there were many substitutions and new line-ups.
Still finished with a career high 26 points on 10-16 from the floor and 6-10 from three, all in only 16 minutes. FYI, the school record for threes in a game is 10, so she had a chance if the game was closer. Rojas also finished with a career best 10 points.
What it means: The Titans are 4-0. This was the Titans final home game before three tournaments to close out their non-league schedule. They will not return home until Thursday Jan. 3 vs Chemeketa to open league play.
What's next: The Titans travel to Longview, WA to play the Lower Columbia Red Devils (3-1) this Saturday at 5 p.m. Then they travel to the Pierce Holiday Invite in Lakewood, WA on Friday Dec. 7.
