Roseburg, Ore. – The Titans found themselves down by as many as 29 points in the second half in a lopsided road loss at No. 3 Umpqua, 96-77.
How it happened
First half: The Titans started 1-9 from the field and as a result they were down 15, 17-2, 5:49 into the game. Rodney Hounshell got his total to five points after a jump shot with 10:18 went down, but the Titans were down 14, 22-8.
The Titans finally got their point total to double figures after a pair of Dylan Reichenberger free throws at the 8:48 mark with the Titans trailing 24-10. A Tashon Brown layup 27 seconds later got the Titans as close as they had been since the 13:52 mark. Isaac Lange converted a layup to make it a 10-point game with 4:59 remaining, extending their run to 10-4. Unfortunately, the Titans finished with nine points over the final 4:59 while conceding 22 points and found themselves down 23 points, 50-27, at half.
The Titans shot 27.5 percent overall and allowed 56.8 percent shooting. The Titans shot 5-22 in the first 5:49 and last 4:59, a 22.7 percent mark. In that span they were minus 28 points. In the middle 9:12 of the half the Titans were plus five. Isaac Lange had 11 points.
Second half: The second half started the way the first started and finished, with the Titans struggling to score and conceding the first six points and trailing 29, 56-27, 1:29 into the half. An immediate response by the Titans cut their deficit to 21 after a 9-2 run over the next 2:17. After a pair of Umpqua baskets the Titans went on another productive run, this time a 10-2 run with eight of the points coming from Isaac Lange, which made it a five possession game, 62-47, with 12:10 remaining.
The closest the Titans would get the rest of the game would be 14 points at the 11:36 mark. After that the gap quickly returned to 20 points only 2:15 later. By the 5:28 mark the deficit had ballooned to 28 points, 90-62. The Titans did not stop fighting, finishing on a 15-6 run to make the final deficit a more respectable 19 points.
The Titans shooting was a much better 43.2 percent, but 17 free throws allowed made it only a plus four half. Umpqua attempted 17 of a maximum 22 free throws (minus free throws on three-point fouls) on 11 Titan fouls while the Titans attempted only seven of a possible 20 free throws on 10 Umpqua fouls. Isaac Lange scored 15 of the Titans 50 points.
What stood out:
96 points allowed: The Titans are 0-4 when allowing 90 plus points and 0-8 when allowing 80 plus points … 10 turnovers: Fewest turnovers in a loss … 10 assists: Tied for the second fewest assists … 9 made free throws: Started 5-1 when making fewer than 10, but 1-2 since.
Who stood out:
Isaac Lange: Scored a career-high 26 points on 10-19 shooting and tied a career-high with four made threes (4-6) … Dominic McGarvey: Scored 11 points, his first double figure game since scoring 13 points versus Wenatchee Valley on Dec. 19; made all five of his field goals, most makes without a miss … Ty Horner: Scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds (14th time with seven or more rebounds) despite four fouls limited him to 22 minutes (fourth consecutive game with four or more fouls, sixth time in last seven games and 10th time in 20 games).
What it means:
The Titans stay in eighth place, only one game ahead of Clark in last place. They sit four games out of the fourth and final playoff spot held by Portland with six games remaining.
